What students actually learn

A SOLIDWORKS course is not just a software tutorial. It is a design course that happens to use software, and the skill progression is the same one a working engineer follows.

Sketching and constraints

Students learn that a sketch is not a drawing. It is a set of geometric relationships. Fully defining a sketch is the first moment most students understand what design intent means.

Part modeling

Extrudes, revolves, sweeps, lofts, and the feature tree. Students learn that the order you build features in determines whether the model survives a design change.

Assemblies

Mates, interference detection, and motion. This is where individual parts become a system and where students first hit the consequences of their own tolerancing decisions.

Drawings

Views, sections, dimensioning, and GD&T. The unglamorous skill that separates a student who can model from a student who can communicate a design to a machinist.

Specialized modules

Sheet metal, weldments, surfacing, and mold design for programs that go deeper. Simulation, CAM, and rendering for programs that go wider.

SOLIDWORKS Coursework

Faculty time is the scarcest resource in any program. SOLIDWORKS Education ships with structured curriculum, tutorials, and interactive courseware built for classroom delivery, covering CAD, simulation, documentation, manufacturing, and visualization.

This means you can run a full semester off existing lesson plans, rather than author them, and map your syllabus directly to certification objectives instead of guessing.

The certification path

Certification is the clearest way to turn a course into a credential.

  • The foundational exam. Appropriate for high school CTE programs, first-year college students, and anyone finishing an introductory sequence. Tests part modeling, assemblies, and drawing fundamentals.

  • The next tier. Appropriate for second-year and university students who have completed advanced part and assembly work.

  • Sheet metal, weldments, surfacing, drawing tools, simulation, and more, for programs with focused tracks.

Getting it running in your lab

The license is straightforward. The deployment is where semesters get lost.

Lab and classroom machines. Education Edition runs on institution-owned workstations. We handle network licensing, image preparation, and version rollout so your fall semester starts on the version you tested over the summer, not whatever installed last.

Student machines. Student Edition installs on personal laptops and home computers and activates over the internet, valid for one academic year. We set up your distribution path so students self-serve instead of queuing at your desk in week one.

Version timing. Education releases follow the academic calendar rather than the commercial one. New versions typically land over the summer, giving you a testing window before fall. We flag the release date and help you plan the upgrade so labs and student installs stay on the same version. Mismatched versions between lab and home is the single most common support ticket in an education program, and it is entirely preventable.

Hardware reality check. Desktop SOLIDWORKS needs real hardware. Discrete graphics, adequate RAM, a supported OS. If your students are on Chromebooks, district-issued tablets, or aging machines, desktop is the wrong path and you should be looking at browser-based CAD instead.
