We sat down with two members of the SWYFT Solutions team to break down how these platforms compare, where shops get the decision wrong, and what to ask before you commit.

What Is CAMWorks?

CAMWorks is an integrated CNC programming tool that runs inside SOLIDWORKS Design and a handful of other CAD platforms. It is also the engine behind SOLIDWORKS CAM itself.

If your programming needs stop at 3+2 axis work, the SOLIDWORKS CAM that ships with your license may already cover you. Once you need to go past that, you move up to a dedicated CAMWorks package.

What Is DELMIA CAM?

DELMIA is a full brand under Dassault Systèmes, and CNC programming is one piece of a much larger toolkit. The DELMIA family also covers shop floor simulation, robotic layout and programming, and broader manufacturing process mapping.

So while CAMWorks is focused on CAM alone, DELMIA CAM is one module inside a wider manufacturing suite.

Both take a SOLIDWORKS model, generate toolpaths, and output the G-code that runs your machine. They both take a model to an output part, but the way they do it is fundamentally different.

CAMWorks vs DELMIA CAM: 7 Key Differences

1. Licensing and independence

CAMWorks requires a SOLIDWORKS license because it is built into the SOLIDWORKS environment. DELMIA CAM is a standalone application.

If your designer and your programmer are sharing the same SOLIDWORKS seat, DELMIA lets the programmer work independently while the designer keeps their license.

2. Nesting

CAMWorks has no native nesting, though workarounds and add-ins exist. DELMIA CAM includes nesting natively, starting at its base package.

3. What is included out of the box

The free CAM functionality that ships with a license differs quite a bit between the two ecosystems.

SOLIDWORKS CAM Standard is mostly 2.5-axis with some basic 3-axis. DELMIA's included tool, NC Shop Floor Programmer, provides 3+2 programming at the base level, a capability that would normally require an upgrade to SOLIDWORKS CAM Professional.

In other words, Dassault includes more capability for free with DELMIA than SOLIDWORKS does with CAMWorks. The trade is that DELMIA's interface and workflow carry a steeper learning curve.

4. Surfacing

DELMIA offers more fine-tuned operation options for complex geometries and tight tolerances. That matters for shops working in automotive or other high-end surfacing applications.

5. Machine simulation

DELMIA includes full machine simulation across all of its packages, which helps you catch interferences before they cause a problem on the floor. In CAMWorks, machine simulation exists as an add-on rather than part of the default package.

6. Specialty cutting processes

DELMIA CAM has dedicated support for laser, waterjet, and plasma cutting. CAMWorks can approximate some of this through workarounds inside SOLIDWORKS, but it is not a built-in function.

7. Manufacturability checks and program versioning

DELMIA CAM includes design manufacturability checkers that flag wall thickness, draft angles, accessibility, and tolerance concerns directly on your model. That is not included in the base SOLIDWORKS CAM or CAMWorks packages.

Versioning is subtler but worth knowing if you use the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for data management. CAMWorks programs are saved embedded in the SOLIDWORKS file itself, so a new revision of the part naturally carries its own programming history. DELMIA CAM programs are separate files, so on 3DEXPERIENCE you can revise and version the program independently of the model. That is useful if you want a history of speed optimizations or programming changes without touching the part file.

Which CAM Software Should Your Shop Choose?

The honest answer depends on your team structure and how deep your CNC needs go.

Choose CAMWorks if: one person handles both design and programming. Same interface, no context switching, no license conflicts. It has a gentler learning curve and works well for a designer who occasionally needs to program a part.

Choose DELMIA CAM if: you have dedicated toolpath programmers separate from your designers, or you are a smaller shop centered on a SOLIDWORKS license that needs genuine 3D machining capability. The same applies if nesting is a must-have, if you run laser, waterjet, or plasma work, or if you want built-in simulation and manufacturability feedback without adding extra tools.

Where Shops Get This Decision Wrong

Neither package is the industry standard pick in every shop we have worked with. Most machinists and programmers gravitate toward whatever package they already know, and that familiarity biases the decision more than actual capability should.

The bigger risk is under-investing. Shops choose the cheaper or more familiar option without accounting for how many people need access and when they need it. If several people need to program at the same time and you have budgeted for one or two licenses, that is where you feel the pinch.

1. Do I need nesting? This is one of the biggest functional differentiators between the two platforms.

2. How many people need access, and does that create a license conflict? CAMWorks rides on a SOLIDWORKS seat. If your designers and programmers compete for the same license, that is a real cost.

3. Do I need to version the program separately from the part? If you are on 3DEXPERIENCE and want programming history preserved apart from the model, that tips toward DELMIA CAM.

What is AI Toolpathing?

AI-driven tool-pathing is starting to show up in this space. These tools generate multiple toolpath options at once, optimizing for cycle time, surface finish, or other criteria, and let you pick the best fit. As the capability matures it will add a new layer to this decision, and we are watching how it integrates with both platforms.
